Ask any wrestler who their toughest opponent is and you’ll hear a name — the state champ, the rival from the next town, the guy who beat them twice last season. But be honest: how many matches did you lose in your head before you ever shook hands?
“He’s stronger than me.” “I always gas in the third.” “If I lose this, I’m done.” That voice is what fights you. And it never needs to make weight.
Know the Voice
Negative self-talk usually sounds like one of three things:
- Prediction: “I’m going to lose.”
- Labeling: “I’m soft. I’m not a real wrestler.”
- Catastrophe: “If this goes wrong, everything’s ruined.”
Once you can name the move, you can counter it — just like recognizing a setup before the shot comes.
Counter the Shot
Swap the sentence. Replace “I always gas” with “I trained for this. Next position.” Short, true, and pointed forward.
Breathe on the whistle. Between periods, take one slow breath in for four counts and out for six. It tells your body the fight is under control.
Wrestle the next position, not the scoreboard. Down two with forty seconds left? The only thing that matters is the next hand fight.
“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:5
Taking a thought captive is a wrestling move. You don’t let it run free on the mat — you control it, break it down, and put it where it belongs.
You Wrestle You
Every match is two matches: the one against him, and the one against you. You can’t control his size, his record, or his coach. You can control your breath, your next position, and what you tell yourself. Win that match first and the other one gets a lot more winnable.
The voice will show up. Let it find you ready.
